When the British Museum decided to loan one of the Elgin Marbles to Russia last year, a decades-long debate over repatriating the treasured antiquities to Athens erupted anew. While Greek officials and others argued that the art was improperly taken and should be returned, James Cuno has long maintained that questions regarding repatriation are complex and that all factors, including the benefits of exploring the world's artistic legacy in encyclopedic museums, should be considered in a request for the return of antiquities.
