Madison's Music: What Does the First Amendment Mean?

For five decades, Burt Neuborne has been one of the nation’s premier public interest lawyers. The former legal director of the ACLU and the founding director of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU, Neuborne decodes the foundation of our civil liberties – the First Amendment. Arguing that you can only understand James Madison’s text if you read it as a musical composition, Neuborne presents an important, new interpretation of the First Amendment as less a list of protections than a vision of democratic practice.
