Kevin Boyle: The OTHER 1960s

The 1960s conjure up strong images of love-ins, flower power, antiwar demonstrations, and civil rights marches. While these crucial reference points continue to resonate throughout our culture, they don't tell the whole story. Many Americans regarded the progressive vanguard with considerable suspicion, giving rise to a political and cultural retrenchment that can be considered the other 1960s. Ohio State University historian Kevin Boyle, winner of the 2004 National Book Award for Arc of Justice, is finishing a much-anticipated book on this topic. He argues that the other 1960s, especially when viewed from a midwestern perspective, sheds new light on the current trajectory of our country.
