Jesmyn Ward: "Men We Reaped"

Winner of the 2014 Chicago Tribune Heartland Award for Nonfiction.

In five years, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life—to drugs, accidents, suicide, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses, one after another, led Ward to write her remarkable memoir "Men We Reaped." Called “raw, beautiful and dangerous” by the New York Times Book Review, it is a haunting and essential story.
