From Bauhaus to Bunny and Beyond

Chicagoan Art Paul gave Playboy its distinctly American look, from the magazine’s award-winning layout to that iconic bunny. But Paul’s design sensibility has European roots. In the late 1940s, he trained at the Institute of Design, known as the “Chicago Bauhaus.” Graphic designer James Goggin recounts Paul’s aesthetic journey from mid-century to the present.

This annual lecture recognizes a generous multiyear grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art. The Terra Foundation is dedicated to fostering the exploration, understanding, and enjoyment of the visual arts in the United States for national and international audiences.
