Trading Races
About the Event:
Who’s Blacker, Maya Angelou or Harriet Tubman? What about Kanye West or Barack Obama? Chicago artist Kenyatta Forbes has found a novel way to explore these questions with her incisive and playful card game, Trading Races. Featured in the Chicago Tribune, VICE News, and NPR, players are dealt five cards featuring famous figures, and compete to convince one another that they hold the “Blackest” card. With each ensuing hand, players dig deeper into the dynamics and complexities of race--Blackness in particular. At CHF, Forbes will join Ashlyn Sparrow, Learning Technology Director at The University of Chicago's Game Changer Chicago Design Lab, to discuss how she created the game--and facilitate a few rounds. Come prepared to play cards, have fun, and participate in difficult but important conversations. At this event, there will be a live musical performance by Lawrence "Binkey" Tolefree.
Happy Hour starts at 5PM. Games begin at 6PM.
Shortlist is CHF's exclusive membership for Chicagoans in their 20s and 30s making moves in the city!
Bronzeville Night recognizes the many contributions made to our community by The Chicago Community Trust. This program is presented by the Trust in partnership with Gallery Guichard.
