Social Media and Democracy
About the Event:
The influence of online platforms like Twitter and Facebook on the 2020 presidential election has left Americans asking what the role of social media should be in our politics and democracy. How can we balance internet regulation with preserving public discourse? What are the differing responsibilities of government, big tech, and everyday people regarding social media? Join us at CHF for a conversation with legal expert Geoffrey Stone, journalist Emily Bazelon (Slate Political Gabfest), and Monika Bickert (Facebook’s head of product policy and counterterrorism).
This program is the second panel in a special series Deep Dive: Speech, curated by Geoffrey Stone
This 3-part series curated and hosted by legal scholar Geoffrey Stone (Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law, University of Chicago) will consider a variety of perspectives on free speech in the 21st century. We'll explore some of the forces driving wide-ranging debates around First Amendment rights in our moment, including freedom of the press and national security, the role of social media platforms and internet companies, and hate speech.
