José Olivarez is the son of Mexican immigrants. His debut book of poems, Citizen Illegal, shows us just how complicated, beautiful, difficult, and joyful it can be to live a life of two cultures—and what it takes to be good, bad, and hopeful. Olivarez joined students at George Washington High School for an afternoon of poetry performance and conversations about growing up Latinx in Chicago.
