David Opdyke: This Land
About the Event:
When artist David Opdyke wanted to address climate change in his work, he found the perfect medium in vintage, hand-tinted postcards. Using their idyllic views of American landscapes as a canvas, Opdyke added apocalyptic painted imagery, from out of control fires to menacing beasts and written messages of doom. Five hundred of these miniature melodramas, organized into a crumbling mosaic, form his critically acclaimed artwork This Land, now on display at Weinberg/Newton Gallery. At CHF, Opdyke will discuss his belief that art might be the very thing needed to spur action on climate change.
Following his program, Opdyke will lead a tour of This Land at Weinberg/Newton Gallery (688 N Milwaukee Ave) at 5:00PM.
This program is presented in partnership with the Weinberg/Newton Gallery and the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan
