Damon Locks and the Black Monument Ensemble

About the Event:

In the Black Monument Ensemble, Chicago artist and musician Damon Locks has put together a spectacular group including dancers from Move Me Soul, and top Chicago musicians including cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, drummer Dana Hall, and percussionist Arif Smith, for a stunning meditation on some of the texts, moments, and music of the ongoing civil rights movement. Where Future Unfolds features the words of Black activists past and present layered on top of intricate beats and harmonies, and references sources as diverse as Public Enemy and Lena Horne. Both joyous and mournful, sobering and inspiring, their music is a reminder of the power of art to combat oppression. Don’t miss this incredible performance!

All attendees of this program are invited to stay for an afterparty with South Side Soul at 8:00pm.

South Shore Night recognizes the many contributions made to our community by The Chicago Community Trust. The evening is presented by the Trust in partnership with The Neighborhood Network Alliance and the Chicago Park District.
