About the Event:

It’s movie time at Chicago Humanities! Join us for a viewing of The Arc of Oblivion, from Executive Producer, Werner Herzog and Director, Ian Cheney. Making a World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, Cheney uncovers the proclivity humans have towards preserving legacy and how it relates to the natural world. Set against the backdrop of the filmmaker’s quest to build an arc in a field in Maine, the story expands into salt mines in the Alps, and ancient libraries in the Sahara, illuminating the world of archives, record-keeping and memory. This film searches for answers to a deeply existential question: In a universe that erases its tracks, why are we so hellbent on leaving a trace?
