Kim Gordon

Is there anyone cooler than Kim Gordon? The founding member of the seminal band Sonic Youth is also a talented musician, artist, writer, and, oh yeah, role model to a generation of women. Now she’s written a memoir recounting her life as a musician and artist, including her partnership and eventual professional and personal breakup with Thurston Moore. Girl in a Band takes us back to the post-punk scene of New York in the 1980s and '90s, when Sonic Youth helped create a musical revolution. She is joined in conversation by Alison Cuddy, CHF’s program director and former WBEZ 91.5 host. Come spend the evening with Gordon, a trailblazing lady of rock and roll, with a special opening performance by Girls Rock! Chicago.

Kim Gordon is a musician, artist, writer, and music producer. Her latest band is Body/Head with Bill Nace.

Alison Cuddy

Alison Cuddy is the associate artistic director at the Chicago Humanities Festival. Before coming to the Festival, she spent more than 10 years at WBEZ 91.5 FM. There she helped launched Odyssey, a nationally syndicated talk show of arts and ideas, hosted the morning newsmagazine Eight Forty-Eight and reported on arts and culture. She currently hosts Strange Brews, a podcast about the culture and community around craft beer.

Girls Rock! Chicago

Girls Rock! Chicago is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering girls’ creative expression, positive self-esteem, and community awareness through rock music. Through their music education programs for girls ages 8 to 16, they are committed to educating girls about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship, because they believe that young girls are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment.
