Alice McDermott’s novels include A Bigamist’s Daughter (1982), Charming Billy (winner of the National Book Award, 1998), Child of My Heart (2002), That Night (1987), At Weddings and Wakes (1992), and After This (2006), the latter three of which have been finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Redbook, Ms. Magazine, Commonweal, and elsewhere. The Richard A. Macksey Professor for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, McDermott is the recipient of a Whiting Writers Award and the 2008 Corrington Award for Literature. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Oswego and her master’s from the University of New Hampshire.
